The Orchards
A self build dwelling in the heart of South Norfolk, which enhances the connection between indoor and outdoor living

We were appointed to prepare a feasibility study for the redevelopment of a residential site which had fallen in disrepair in Forncett St Mary, Norfolk. Our emerging design response was developed through a close examination of local context and self build planning policy.
Through a carefully calibrated site layout, the scheme delivers a new high quality residential building, which provides 4 bedrooms and responds to the existing site features in a more logical way.

Like much of Forncett St Mary, our proposed massing and location on the site is determined more by the relationship of buildings to the landscape and trees, than to any other site features. We wanted to create a lifelong connection between the habitable spaces and the Orchard whilst also creating quieter, more private landscaped areas to the northwest of the dwelling. Public and private spaces are well defined in their connection to the neighbouring orchard, with a clear hierarchy of views looking out to the north from habitable spaces.
We have intended to create one dwelling whose massing looks more akin to a series of individual building groups, a modern interpretation of the farmhouse and outbuildings so frequently seen in the surrounding villages.
